Definition:

The body’s defense mechanism. Beautifully complex and multi-layered, its primary function is to identify and destroy antigens and pathogens, like viruses and bacteria, as well as parasites and other foreign agents.

It must distinguish between pathogens and the body’s normal cells and tissues. If it cannot, and the immune system begins to attack the body, an autoimmune disease (like lupus) is usually present.
