According to research, there is no clear association between silicone breast implants and the development of lupus. Furthermore, in 1998, the Institute of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences conducted an independent, unbiased review of research regarding breast implants and its affect on a variety of health concerns. Results were unveiled in June 1999, and implants were determined to have no cause-effect relationship with lupus. For those who are considering having their implants removed to ease lupus symptoms, it should be understood that there is no evidence to suggest that removal has a stronger effect either way –- decreasing or increasing lupus symptoms.
