Take Note: Drug Warning for Lupus Patients

From Jeri Jewett-Tennant, MPH, About.com GuideMay 18, 2008

Late last week, in an online notice to doctors, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration reminded doctors that mycophenolate mofetil (CellCept) and mycophenolate sodium (Myfortic), two immunosuppressants, can lead to miscarriage and birth defects in pregnant women. Both drugs are sometimes used to treat lupus.

With this reminder, its a good time to remember that it is imperative that you understand your treatment plan and any possible dangers or side effects that might come as a result of the drugs you are taking or any other portion of your regime.

Moreso, it's important that you stick to the plan once you've agreed to it, and that you keep a line of communication open with your doctor, should you need to discuss effects of any part of the plan, or should there be an unexpected deviation of the plan.

Could this be applied to patients longterm?
1) If taken before pregnancy, could this affect future pregnancy, even if stopped for a year+?

2) Has it been found to be permanent side effect?
