Scientists Identify Genes Linked To Lupus

Monday January 21, 2008

I recently read a journal article that touted a recent scientific study that revealed three candidate genes with strong links to lupus, as well as a few genes with weaker links to the disease. The revelation is another step toward pinpointing the exact gene that triggers the disease, and hopefully, from there, a cure. The article was reporting on a study in the journal Nature

What struck me, though, was a quote from one of the lead scientists, who said that his team team was continuing to work on refining the studies and that blood samples from lupus patients were needed to continue the research.

It really underscored for me how much work is needed to continue the fight to find a cure, and how it isn’t just women and men in lab coats doing the work. Volunteers in clinical studies and in fundraising events are really making a difference, too.

It was exciting to read the news. It was even more exciting to know that it wouldn’t’ve been possible without the help of lupus patients like you.
